Sudanese newspaper: Ethiopian soldiers seek asylum in Sudan

The Commission for Refugees in Sudan announced that dozens of Ethiopian soldiers have applied for asylum in Sudan against the backdrop of the war in their country since November 2020, according to the Sudan Tribune newspaper.


The Commission for Refugees said in a statement: "120 Ethiopian officers in Umm Karkour camp, located in eastern Sudan, have applied for asylum to the Government of Sudan.


She pointed out that the Ethiopian officers who requested asylum were in the strength of the UN peacekeeping forces in Sudan.


The Sudan Tribune indicates that these soldiers were among the international peacekeeping forces "UNICEF" in the disputed Abyei region between Sudan and South Sudan.


The Refugee Commission confirmed that the Ethiopian officers hold high military ranks, explaining that among them 106 male soldiers and 14 female soldiers, all of whom belong to the Tigray nationalism.
