The United Nations special rapporteur calls for sanctions against Myanmar

Thomas Andrews, the UN special rapporteur on human rights in Myanmar, said Friday that there are "increasing reports and photographic evidence" of security forces using live ammunition against protesters, in violation of international law.

Andrews added that the UN Security Council should consider imposing sanctions, an arms embargo and travel bans due to the February 1 military coup, and he again requested a mission in the country.

Myint Tho, Myanmar's ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, said his country would continue to cooperate with the United Nations and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), adding, "We do not want to terminate the nascent democratic transformation in the country."
